John Verhoek made a surprising move abroad to go from second division FC Den Bosch to first division French giants Stade Rennes. In January 2011 he signed a 4,5 year contract worth 0,5M euro.

John Verhoek his brother Wesley Verhoek is also a professional football player. Just before the closing of the 2011 summer transfer window, John joined the club of Wesley, ADO Den Haag, on a season loan deal from Rennes. In the second half of the season, Wesley moved to FC Twente and John was the only Verhoek at Den Haag.

In the season 2012-13, Verhoek will play on loan from Rennes at German second division outfit FSV Frankfurt. At the end of the season he moved to Sankt Pauli in a permanent transfer until June 2016.

When his contract expired, Verhoek moved to 2. Bundesliga outfit 1.FC Heidenheim 1846 on a 2-year contract.
